Simple Lion Facts That You Should Know...

Lions are traditionally depicted as the King of the Jungle and are probably the most feared among all wild animals. Like any other members of the animal families; lions that currently exist are classified into two main subspecies. These are the African Lions that are predominant in eastern, central and southern Africa and the Asiatic lions that are found in the Gir Forest of India. Both subspecies feed on antelopes, gazelles, goats, buffaloes, chital, zebras and wildebeests.

The African lion is 4.5 to 6.5 feet long from the head to the rump(approximately 1.4 to 2 metres long). This subspecies has a tail that measures 26.20 to 39.5 inches long (approximately 67 to 100 centimetres), whereas their weight ranges from 260 to 420 lbs (approximately 120 to 192 kilograms). On the other hand, the Asiatic lions tends to be much bigger in size and are hence heavier. They weigh 300 to 500 lbs (approximately 120 to 225 kilograms). Their tails measure 23.60 to 35.42 inches long (approximately 60 to 90 centimetres) while their lengths range from 6.55 to 9.20 feet long (approximately 200 to 280 centimetres).

One common fact about both species is that females are the main hunters of the pride, while the male is the main protector of the pride. Lions are very territorial, and this is proven whenever any strange males try to disrupt. However, the Asiatic lion is currently endangered.
