Simple Elephant Facts That You Should Know...

Elephants are evidently the largest land animals on earth. Elephants are characterised by extra long noses and trunks, wide, large and floppy ears, and magically thick legs. Just like the lions species; there are two broad species of the elephant family. The African elephant and the Asian elephant. The two species of the elephant family live on distinct continents, and have distinct features just as their names sound.

African elephants are much bigger than the Asian elephants. African elephants grow to between 8.2 to 13 feet (approximately 2.5 to 4 metres) long from the shoulder to the toes. They weigh between 5,000 and 14,000 lbs (2.26 to 6.35 kilograms). On the other hand; the Asian elephants grow up to 6.5 to 9.8 feet (2.0 to 3.0 metres) long from the shoulder to the toes. They weigh between 2,041 to 4,990 kilograms (2.0 to 4.99 tonnes).

Both species of elephants eat grasses, roots, bark and fruits. Elephants are able to use their tusks to pull the bark of tree trunks and to pull up roots of grasses. Scientifically, the appetite of an elephant is directly proportional to its body size. An adult elephant is able to eat up to 300lbs (approximately 137 kilograms) of food in a single day. Elephants move in groups, or a family called a herd. The herd is usually led by a matriarch, which is usually the oldest of the female members.
