Simple Vasco da Gama Facts That You Should Know...

The Vasco da Gama Pillar, located in Malindi is believed to be one of the oldest European monuments in Africa. The monument was erected by a Portuguese explorer called Vasco da Gama in the year 1498. This is not the only pillar that the explorer built in the Kenyan coast. The location of the pillar is approximately 120 kilometres from Mombasa City. The pillar is an attraction to both local and international tourists, who visit the pillar to learn of its rich history.

The Vasco da Gama pillar is managed by the National Museums of Kenya. Originally, Vasco da Gama erected the pillar with the intention to provide him with a sailing direction as he was on his way to India. Other Portuguese traders who frequently used the Indian Ocean and the east African coastline for trading activities were able to see the pillar from far. India is on the east of the pillar, while Malindi (the actual location of the pillar) is on the west.
